This is where some of the first homes were built in the early years of the colony, and these elaborate mansions later became<br \/>conventillos (tenement housing) for European immigrants. The Col\u00f3n can seat<br \/>2500 spectators and provides standing room for another 500. (Expect to pay a<br \/>few pesos to take pictures of tango dancers or pose with props.) The capital of<br \/>Argentina\u2019s winelands, a perfect destination for sybarites, foodies and adventure seekers.<\/p><p><strong>TO DO IN MENDOZA<\/strong><br \/>Walk around the main square Independence Plaza. Two blocks away from other four smaller<br \/>plazas, San Mart\u00edn, Chile, Italia, and Espa\u00f1a.<br \/>Visit the Museum of the Foundational Area, inaugurated in 1993, the museum is located in the<br \/>exact same place where the Spanish captain Pedro Del Castillo founded Mendoza city. It\u2019s<br \/>located in the historical centre of the Old City. It is an archaeological museum which contains<br \/>pictures that exhibit the historical evolution of the city<\/p><p>Discover the Basilica of St. Francis, the Basilica has a great architectural value. It houses the<br \/>treasured remains of Merceditas, (Jos\u00e9 De San Mart\u00edn \u0301s daughter) and her husband Mariano<br \/>Balcarce. The Basilica was declared a National Historic Monument in 1929. It carries the image<br \/>of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora Del Carmen de Cuyo.<br \/>Shop at The Central Market, this market is the oldest shopping center in Mendoza. Its<br \/>construction dates back to 1884.
